RLMS Managing Director, Tony Glanville and Bell-Fruit’s Group Sales and Customer Liaison Manager, Vanda Osinska, are the first recipients of the President’s bacta Community Awards, an initiative introduced by National President, Gabi Stergides to recognise the sterling work undertaken by bacta members in their local and regional communities.
The award to Tony Glanville and wife Sarah, was made in recognition of the phenomenal fundraising undertaken on behalf of bacta charity partner, Rays of Sunshine, which has seen them run and cycle over 10,000 miles each, raising £48,000 for the charity which grants wishes to children living with serious or life-limiting illnesses. Vanda, who is due to retire after 35-years in the industry, was selected for her unstinting work organising the bacta Summer Ball, which has raised tens of thousands of pounds for a wide range of charities.
Explaining the thinking behind the awards, Gabi Stergides, said: “One of the many stand out features of the bacta culture is that so many of our members make a really positive and profound contribution to society whether it’s through a connection with their local communities or a commitment to going beyond the call of duty for a range of local, regional and national charities. We discussed these very special qualities at National Council and felt it was important to recognise attributes and a mind set which contribute so much to society.
“Rather than launch a competition we wanted to make this a discretionary initiative which will enable the trade association to recognise positive and life affirming acts wherever and whenever they take place. Where possible we will invite local MPs and dignitaries to make the presentation alongside myself, Vice President James Miller or Chief Executive, John White and to work the story through local media.
“Moving forward, we would like bacta members to nominate potential recipients and provide a brief outline of the contribution the individuals' make. Charitable work will obviously feature highly but we are also keen to hear of contributions made to regional economies, mentoring initiatives, business turn around stories that have helped create jobs, volunteering initiatives and any other positive action which has benefitted society at large. I believe there are many unsung heroes out there who deserve some recognition themselves.”
